Florida is a beautiful State and you’ll be able to explore it properly in a rental
car. If you base yourself in Miami, you can use your rental car to explore the Everglades
National Park, which covers 2500 square miles and is a designated World Heritage
Site.
You could also use your rental car to drive to the Florida Keys, the group of islands
to the south of Miami. The main islands are linked together by the Florida Keys
Overseas Highway, so you can drive your rental car from Miami to the first of the
islands, Key Largo, and down through the Keys to the popular tourist destination
of Key West. It takes less than 4 hours to get to Key West from Miami in a hire
car, but there is so much to see and do on the Florida Keys that it’s worth spending
a day or two exploring each of them.
Florida is also known for its beaches and if you use Orlando as a base for your
rental car holiday, St. Petersburg Beach or Clearwater Beach are easy to reach.
Alternatively, head north of Orlando in your hire car and explore the A1A Historic
and Scenic Coastal Byway, a 72 mile stretch of road that begins in Ponte Vedra Beach
and ends in Flagler Beach. You’ll be able to see some beautiful scenery and, for
a break from your rental car, stop off en route and visit the historic city of St.
Augustine, the Guana Tolomato Matanzas Reserve, the seaside resort of Vilano Beach
or the Marineland dolphin conservation centre.
